I crawled under the large dining hall table and smiled at, Lolly, my youngest of three house elves. “What are you doing down her little one?”
She tugged her ears. “I-I-,” she lowered her voice. “I saw a ghost.”
Aceline smiled and took the small creatures hand. “Ghost or not they can’t harm you. They’re just here sharing our space. Won’t you please come out.”
Lolly shook her head, “My apologies, ma’am but I’m scared.”
“Of ghosts?”
“Of him.” Her voice shaked. “Cruel man broke Miss Evan’s heart, he did.”
Aceline’s smile fell, “My mother?”
Lolly nodded, “I swear I saw him in the window, Ma’am. The same one, every year.”
“Who? You tell me right now.”
“S-Snape.”
The words were enough to both shatter her world and shake her to her core. With her wand at the ready she lifted the white curtain of cloth and ran towards the door way to the patio, the way the elf had pointed. But there was no one- nothing. Just darkness and chill.
